Enjoy a talk by Dr. Aren Roukema on Ouija Boards and Spiritoscopes: The Objects of Spiritualism

This talk will explore devices invented to communicate with the dead in late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century Spiritualism. From the moment of Spiritualism’s founding in 1848, its adherents have invented numerous devices to communicate with spirits or prove their ability to visit us in person as ghosts or hauntings. These technologies were based on the belief that the spirit world is a material realm which we should be able to discover — and therefore contact — if we could just discover the method. This talk will introduce the history and context of these ideas, and introduce a number of objects developed by Spiritualists, including the Ouija board, the spiritoscope, and spirit photographs.

Dr Aren Roukema is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow and sessional lecturer at the University of British Columbia. Aren has published on Spiritualism and other esoteric currents in edited volumes published with Routledge and journals including Science Fiction Studies, in addition to a monograph, Esotericism and Narrative: The Occult Fiction of Charles Williams (Brill, 2018). Aren is Editor of Correspondences: Journal for the Study of Esotericism.
